Subject: dumb down
Подскажите плиз как правильно перевести dumb исходя из следующих предложений:
Newsweek has acknowledged what we have been telling you for so long now, that door knobs can smarten up (or dumb down!) the look of an entire room
и далее в конце текта идет:We only have one final comment for Newsweek that you can also be dumb as a post, dumb as a doornail and dumb as a dodo!

Большо спасибо.

The author is just playing with phrases, so this one is going to be a real brain-buster to nail down!

I won't wager to suggest the Russian (yet), but I can explain the English more so to get all the Russian thinkers creative juices flowing.

The thing that seems obvious is that the author is trying to liven up a very dull subject (doorknobs).

"Smarten up" is very much in place here, since one is dealing with style. On speaks of "smartening up one's wardrobe" to describe getting good looking clothes for one's self.

"Dumbing down" is used here ironically / playfully. It is not usually used with fashion but with serious material. "The candidate was speaking to group of drunken 20-year olds from a bad part of town, and so he dumbed down his speech."

as for the fixed phrases on being dumb at the end, I'm sure that the literal meaning is clear (post = fencepost) - good luck on a Russian equivalent !
