Subject: Проработать возможность... Вот сижу и туплю. А вроде еще только утро понедельника... =)Интересует фраза "проработать возможность" в контексте: В голову лезут всяческие "to explore the possibility", но достаточно ли это однозначно в данном случае?... Респект. |

| Можно изобразить что-то канцелярское, типа "to deeply/thoroughly study the feasibility of..." |

| Ой-ли... "Проработать возможность" - это конечно, русский канцеляризм, но за ним стоит куда как больше, чем "determine whether we could use". Это может быть инженерный анализ, проект модификаций, ТЭО, обсчет экономики и проч. и проч. |

| Thanks Tal'. I'm sure it would work fine, but it's just about our situation. We had already asked them to send us those specs and drawings, and they instead try to persuade us that their equip. will not work for our application (very smart of their Sales Manager, huh? =) So i just want a little bit of emphasis on what we need them for. |
| 10-4, it all depends on what ur objectives r. if u are determined to provide word for word translation, then by all means, "study the feasibility of" works. however, if u prefer to provide the kind of translation that doesn't read as such, that feels organic to native speakers, then u need to pick ur brain a little, bounce ideas off of your inner perfectionist in order to strike that ultimate balance where u could convey the same meaning in an envelope that just doenst sound contrived. try as i may, i cannot see ur version qualify. tal' |
| drago, well, then it is a clinical case of miscommunication, and not on ur part, mind u. why not ask them outright to send u the necessary specifications so u could determine for urselves the suitability, or otherwise of their equipment? instead of using those russian pencil pushing cliches, talk to the originator if it'd be ok to change the document a bit to read something like what i included in the previous senntence. and u r right, it is very dumb of their sales manager to sweep aside ur request off-hand. if they are determined to not understand ur letter, then i guess the only still avenue available is to use absolutely crystal clear language that will not be subject to ambiguity and (mis)interpretation. |
| I think it's okay to say "to study the feasibility of" or "to study the possibilities of" (the latter in plural and better). I have seen both, used formally by natives, in a similar context. |
