Subject: that moved the application range for In 1966, the X55R was introduced using 90º chisel-shaped compacts and significantly improved penetration rates in medium hard formations. Table 2.1 shows the development of compact shapes that moved the application range for TCI bits into softer formations. These shapes were developed to improve penetration rate and maintain durability. Longer shapes are used for soft formations and shorter, more blunt shapes are used for hard formations.
