Subject: noodbie question I was talking with a Russian friend the other day and she asked me how many times I have been to the Ukraine.I responded "может быть пять разов" She quickly corrected me and told me it should be "пять раз". I went home and check my grammar book and it gave examples of how to count. один раз Why does раз not follow the same rules as other nouns like час? |
I cannot explain. I think there are more exceptions than rules in the Russian language. I think it's awful for foreigners. |
Simply put (but not simply learned!), there are three different ways a plural masculine noun may end in the Genitive case: -ов / -ей / -0. You may find this wiki article useful: |
In other words, раз doesn't follow the same rules as other nouns, but it's not the only one. There are three different categories of nouns each doing their own thing :( |
