Subject: noodbie question
I was talking with a Russian friend the other day and she asked me how many times I have been to the Ukraine.
I responded "может быть пять разов"
She quickly corrected me and told me it should be "пять раз".

I went home and check my grammar book and it gave examples of how to count.
один час
два часа
пять часов

один раз
два раза
пять раз

Why does раз not follow the same rules as other nouns like час?

I cannot explain. I think there are more exceptions than rules in the Russian language. I think it's awful for foreigners.

Simply put (but not simply learned!), there are three different ways a plural masculine noun may end in the Genitive case: -ов / -ей / -0.

In other words, раз doesn't follow the same rules as other nouns, but it's not the only one. There are three different categories of nouns each doing their own thing :(
