Subject: It'll put Shakespeare back with the shipping news.
Помогите, пожалуйста: цитируется фраза из фильма. Не очень понимаю, что там с Шекспиром предлагается сделать...

Robert Warwick: "'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' is going to be the greatest tragedy ever made! The world will weep! Humanity will sob!"

Willam Demarest: "It'll put Shakespeare back with the shipping news."

There is the front page news which carries the most important events of the day. Here the author implies that 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' will be front page news: "...the greatest tragedy ever made! The world will weep! Humanity will sob!"

As we all know, in terms of playwrights, Shakespeare has been "front page news" in the English speaking world for centuries. "Shipping news" is something very specific. Not many people read it. Only those few who need to know when a ship has docked or is departing will read the shipping news. And it is buried somewhere deep in a corner of the newspaper.

Have you heard the song, "Roll over Beethoven, here comes rhythm and blues"?

Well, allegedly, 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' is going to do to Shakespeare what rhythm and blues claimed to want to do with Beethoven - put him back with the shipping news.
