Another obstacle which must be avoided is “reset windup.” Many control schemes base the output value on a sum of multiple components. For example, a PID control scheme sums a Proportional component and an Integral component. In certain situations, the value of the output may reach its limit (100%) while one of the components is still increasing.
Although the output cannot be driven past 100%, it will take time for the component value to return to the appropriate range. During this time, if it is necessary to lower the output, the artificially high component value can cause a delay. In order to keep the control scheme components within the appropriate range, an approach called “anti-reset windup limiting” is used.
