у меня это ассоциируется с чем-то таким советским, когда надо было где-то подрабатывать, подворовывать, урывать копеечку на стороне, т.е. никакого отношения к "протестантской этике" это выражение не имеет. плюс надо было приспосабливаться. какая-то смесь weathercock и hamster on the wheel. потому и контекст интересует |

The only expression I can thonk of, that kind of zeros in on nephew's comment is "Life is about survival of the fittest". I don't think that the Russian expression is readily understood in other cultures. Not to be hypocritical, but to an everage American the idea of "stealing a little" to survive sounds strange. Not that Americans don't steal. But it is kind of considered taboo to even mention the thought, much less advocate the idea as a "guide to survival." Hope this helps. |
