The assault on the Jesuits and on their devotion to reason and the freedom of the will had begun in Belgium, and was accelerated towards the end of the sixteenth century by Dr Michael de Bay, chancellor of the great University of Louvain. Bay, and Baianism, launched a furious intramural warfare within Louvain against Leonard Lessius and the Jesuits on the faculty. Chancellor de Bay managed to convert most of the Louvain faculty to his creed, which adopted the Calvinist creed of predestination of an elect. In France, the absolutist pro-royalists began a bitter campaign against the Jesuit Order, which they linked with the Catholic Leaguers and the assassination of the centrist and pro-Calvinist Henrys. In particular, the attorney Antoine Arnauld, defending royal absolutism to the hilt, petitioned for the expulsion of the Jesuits from France, angrily declaiming that they were the worst enemies of 'the sacred doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings'. Arnauld was originally employed to press the case against the Jesuits by the University of Paris, and its theological faculty of the Sorbonne, which had also been swept by the crypto-Calvinist tide.Если кому не сложно, поделитесь соображениями насчет того, что в данном случае значит press the case. не заметил, что "кампания" там уже есть выше. возм. что-то вроде "был привлечен в качестве (основного) идеолога [борьбы с иезуитами]" имхо |

Что касается идеолога, особенно основного, им, похоже, был упомянутый ближе к началу абзаца д-р Михаил Байюс (Dr Michael de Bay), ректор Лувенского университета. |

ну, Байюс был как бы отцом-вдохновителем (Герценом), а потом подключились активисты на местах, в парижах и болоньях "для борьбы с иезуитами" передает общий смысл, но теряется образность, кмк |
| И всё же, сильно смахивает на то, что речь может идти всё-таки о какой-то юридической процедуре. Очень уж лексика специфическая: attorney, employed, case... |

В данном контексте я бы написал "привлечен", а не "нанят". to press the case - создать обоснованную теорию необходимости борьбы с иезуитством. |

ТС, мне кажется вы путаете Арно-отца (1560-1619) и Арно-сына (1612-1694) в вашем тексте речь идет про отца, который был правоведом |

Antoine Arnauld senior was a highly respected Parisian lawyer who with his wife Catherine Marie de Druy had twenty children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. Their oldest child was Robert, born in 1588, while their youngest was Antoine Arnauld, the subject of this biography. When Antoine was born in 1612 his eldest brother Robert was 24 years old. In fact Antoine Arnauld senior died when his son Antoine was only seven years old. He had become famous when he defended the University of Paris against the Jesuits in 1594. He was so successful in pleading the case that his speech was known as "the original sin of the Arnaulds" and considered by the Jesuits as the beginning of their battle against the Arnauld family who would later become Jansenists.
