Subject: Sequence of tenses
Hey all. I'm a bit stuck with the following. Can you help me pls?

I've found out today that the money HASN'T BEEN or WASN'T transferred to your account?

И в каком дальше времени:

, while we were sure that you had it.

first part - both possible, but the second part changes depending on the tense you use in the first one

consider:
I've found out today that the money hasn't been transferred to your account while we were sure you received it

or

I've found out today that the money wasn't transferred to your account while we were sure it did.

I guess it's 'While we were sure it was' not 'did'.

So then what's the difference between the former and the latter tense wise?

"did" is correct here

example - I wasn't planning on going but did {go}anyway

Nope. This is a different case. Money cannot go by itself. So it's 'was' that needs to be used here.

not big difference - you can use either one
just, in the first exmple "hasn't been" assumes "we sent it and thought you got it" whereas in the second one - it's money, money wasn't - money didn't

technically it did go by itself since you wired it )))

Ok. Thanks for clearing me up on the tense sequence. But it must still be 'was' in the second argument :)

fair enough - it is your text )

Clea

Plus another thing. It simply heats my brains up.

I've found out that the money were not transferred to you while we were sure it HAD BEEN.

What do think about that?

I mean in terms of grammar it's OK, but do we need such a pile of tenses?

 Clea

link 13.05.2010 11:57
))) you could replace "have found out" to "we heard" or sth to that extent

or change the structure alltogether if it's not sensitive

Sorry to hear the amount remains due whereas we thought we're settled

but am afraid at the end you'll still end with the a "different" pile )

That's what I'm saying. I need Present Perfect since I use 'today' or I do not?

 Clea

think you do....
example: (sorry it's just easier for me)
- we did this today
- so i've heard

p.s. specially in writing )

I found out today that the money has not been transferred to your account, though we were sure that you had received it.

Clea, после этих примеров (не самих по себе, а в связке с "подтверждаемой" мыслью)

" example - I wasn't planning on going but did {go}anyway "
"example: (sorry it's just easier for me)
- we did this today
- so i've heard "

Ваш авторитет как грамматиста для меня рухнул..

Ну ошибся человек. Ну что вы так сразу?

fella,
да, сейчас мне кажется, что в моем сообщении мне не удалось избежать излишней резкости :(

(два подряд примера "не в тему" на фоне авторитетно звучащей беседы о временных формах немного вывели из равновесия)

Прошу прощения, если задел, Clea, ничего личного, как говорится. Успехов нам всем в дальнейшем освоении мастерства.
