Subject: "thought leaders" и "public intellectuals" gen. The philosopher Isaiah Berlin famously distinguished between two styles of thinking, which he identified with the hedgehog and the fox. The hedgehog is captivated by a single big idea, which he applies unremittingly. The fox, by contrast, lacks a grand vision and holds many different views about the world—some of them even contradictory. We can always anticipate the hedgehog’s take on a problem—just as we can predict that market fundamentalists will always prescribe freer markets, regardless of the nature of the economic problem. Foxes carry competing, possibly incompatible theories in their heads. They are not attached to a particular ideology and find it easier to think contextually. In the terminology of Daniel Drezner, foxes are “thought leaders” while hedgehogs are the true public intellectuals. The term public intellectual describes the intellectual participating in the public-affairs discourse of society, in addition to an academic career.

Если отталкиваться от Дрезнерского контекста (в статье из Вики) According to his view intellectuals cultivate opposing views and ambiguities while thought leaders "develop their own singular lens to explain the world, and then proselytize that worldview to anyone within earshot.
посмотрите сами отрывок из интервью (жирный текст - вопрос, остальное - овет): You talk about public intellectuals and thought leaders—the core of the ideas industry. What’s the difference? I think of it the way Isaiah Berlin talked about intellectuals in his essay “The Hedgehog and the Fox,” where he said the fox is someone who knows a little about a lot, and the hedgehog knows one big thing. Public intellectuals are like foxes; they are experts, but perfectly willing to opine about a wide array of topics. They are critics—they can tell you everything that is wrong with everyone else’s ideas; they are really good at that. In some ways, public intellectuals are the peer reviewers of any marketplace idea; they stress test ideas. Thought leaders are the hedgehogs. They know one big thing; they are evangelists, proselytizers. They think their one big idea can explain anything. You give them any sort of problem, and they will somehow fit it with whatever idea they have that’s preconceived. |
The Ideas Industry. |
Public intellectuals know enough about many things to be able to point out intellectual charlatans. Thought leaders know one big thing and believe that their important idea will change the world. Т.е. |
When I refer to “public intellectuals,” I mean experts who are versed and trained enough to be able to comment on a wide range of public policy issues. The public intellectual serves a vital purpose in democratic discourse: exposing shibboleths masquerading as accepted wisdom. Public intellectuals are critics, and critiquing those who hawk bad policy wares is a necessary function in a democracy. When public intellectuals lose their prestige, it becomes that much easier for politicians or charlatans to advance an idea into the public consciousness, regardless of its intrinsic merits, through sheer, unflagging will. |
We can always anticipate the hedgehog’s take on a problem—just as we can predict that market fundamentalists will always prescribe freer markets, regardless of the nature of the economic problem. |
Thought leaders, on the other hand, are the modern iteration.
