Dmitry G: Apologies for the late reply, I've been away visiting friends and so haven't been on MT. ** BTW, how would you transliterate such last names as Сергеев, Андреев, Фадеев and the like? ** Personally I'd transliterate them Sergeyev, Andreyev and Fadeyev respectively, but I repeat that that's just one of several options that are available. I'd use -eyev (with an added y) rather than -eev only because 'ee' in English (as in 'keep', 'steel' etc) is normally pronounced 'ий' – and you don't want an English reader with no knowledge of Russian to think that the names are pronounced Сергийв, Андрийв and Фадийв respectively. |
johnstephenson, you're my man! :) I know a doctor in the UK whose surname is Makeyeva, she's originally from Russia, and her surname was spelled as Makeeva in her passport, so she told me all her British colleagues would pronounce it as Mac-Eva ("Макива", с ударением на протяжный "и"). |
In Kazakhstan, they generally transliterate "еев" as "eyev" and "ьев" as "yev", e.g.

Aiduza 2:01: Exactly. I know of a Polish dentist in the UK who's called Mr Wójcicki (войцицкий). His receptionists all tried to pronounce his name but eventually gave up and now just call him "Mr Widgetski". Unfortunately 'widget' = 'штуковина'! |

Also, I didn't realise that Kazakhstan's official name for itself in English is 'Kazakstan'. Unfortunately no-one in the UK/US takes any notice of this, as almost everyone here spells it 'Kazakhstan' – perhaps due to the Russian influence during the Soviet era? On the other hand, almost everyone here pronounces Никита Хрущёв's name "Крущёв". Brits and Americans are notorious for mis-pronouncing – anglicising, or just screwing up – foreign words/names. |
Kazakhstan is currently the official name of the country. It was spelled differently (as shown on the scan above) for a few years in the past, but not anymore. Soon the country name is going to change again - this time to Qazaqstan. |
I can't help but wonder: what could the "Russian influence" possibly have to do with the letter "h"(which obviously hails from the Must be Russian meddling again.. :-( Aiduza, PS France scores! |
correction: France score! ''s'' is obviously redundant there |

Aiduza: I see. Peking - Beijing, Leningrad - St Petersburg, Salisbury - Harare, Bombay - Mumbai.... Where next? It's all very confusing.... :-) |

mikhailS: Not a Latin 'h', but 'kh' – a transliteration of the 'х' in the Russian name for it! I'm suggesting that we possibly just copied the Russian spelling. |

edasi: I thought of using 'у' instead of 'о' as it's a Polish 'ó' rather than an 'o', but I opted for 'о' on balance. Your transliteration could be closer, however. It's not 'Уйджицкий', though! |
