'probe' here = 'a (usually official) investigation' (into a person's/an organisation's activities). 'to settle a probe' = 'to pay the regulators/investigators money in recognition of the fact that you've done sth wrong or owe them money, so that they stop pursuing/investigating you'. It's not a bribe, but recognition (in the form of a payment) by the party being investigated, that they've done wrong. 'after them' here = colloquial for 'pursuing/investigating them', as in |
