Subject: 0.2 mm (0.008 in) Square gen.

Доброго времени суток.

Есть текст про станок для сварки, в нём есть табличка с характеристиками кристаллов.

Minimum Die Size
0.4 mm (0.016 in) Square

И вот я сижу и думаю это квадрат (в смысле форма кристалла) или площать - в оригинале не поставили "2"?

Как вы думаете?

а чего тут думать? 0,016 дюйма = 0,4 мм, а 0,016 кв. дюйма = 10,3 кв. мм, значит квадрат это не про площадь

Обычно для квадратного профиля или отверстия указывают только один размер - размер стороны квадрата

There's a big difference between square inches and inches square. (The same applies equally to all other units of length -- mm, miles, km or whatever).

* If sth covers an area of 4 square inches, the area covered is equivalent to 4 squares, each of which measures 1 inch x 1 inch.
* But if sth covers an area of 4 inches square, the area covered measures 4 inches x 4 inches = 16 square inches.

So whether the word 'square' appears before or after the unit of length, makes a big difference.

'inches square' can also be written 'inches squared'. (You can't write 'squared inches', though).

2 in² = 2 square inches
2 in x 2 in = 2 inches square(d)
