Subject: Monkey business for investors. Q. Investors recently lost a large amount of money. But if others were not enriched by thesame amount, were did the money go? A. Much of that so-called lose money never existed. Here's an example: Suppose you buy stock in a $1million company at $1 a share. A year later, nothing has changed at the company, but the stock is trading at $100 a share. You believe your stock is now worth $100 a share. So do all the other investors. Your brokerage statements indicate that you holdings are worth $100 multiplied by the number of shares you own. But when you add up all this stock ownership, you see that a company worth $1 million now appeares to be worth $100 million only because to last share of stock sold at a high price. This makes no sense, but the figure is commonly used to describe a company's theoretical value. (It's called MARKET CAPITALIZATION or "market cap.") Now, say the price plummets to $1a share. Suddenly, the company is worth $1 million again. Where did that $99 million go? Nowhere. It never existed in the first place. So funny, isn't it? |

Так это ж не первый (и не последний) "мыльный пузырь". Помнится, когда-то в Нидерландах за пару луковиц тюльпана можно было домик прикупить; но всё хорошее когда-то заканчивается :) А о более свежих "пузырях" при желании можно нарыть кучу книг - серьезных, а не написанных от балды, как первый пост в этой теме. |
