'Confession' = 'acknowledgement of one's sins' (исповедь) in Roman Catholicism and certain other religions -- either directly to God, or to a priest in a 'confessional box', as here....

а вот Which religion do you believe in уже не очень правильно:
вера (в англ. faith или beliefs) ≠ религия (religion, religious practice)

и как по мне, to believe in religion = верить в то, что религия обладает какими-то контекстными свойствами (например, полезна или эффективна и т.д.)

Except that 'to believe in religion' isn't quite the same as 'to believe in A [particular] religion', which can sometimes mean what you say, but usually just means 'to follow/belong to a [particular] religion'.

Hence expressions on official documents etc such as 'regardless of a candidate's/applicant's/claimant's religious beliefs', which doesn't mean 'regardless of whether they believe in the свойства of religion/the свойства of a particular religion'; it just means 'which religion they belong to'.

would probably be rendered in English as something like 'to believe in the power of religion/the power of a particular religion'.
