October tea,

sorry bobe,

if you see tadjiks as a "problem for Russia" that DOES make you racist. Or rather, exposes you as such. No matter how many nationalities you've grown up with, no matter how many ethnic minorities in your own ancestry, calling someone a problem based on their national identity, religion, sex or whatever IS racist.

I can see that to you, it's only banter on an internet forum. But can I just say, the Original Poster is from Kazachstan, would that be something you'd pick on as well? And do you think dear Rashid would feel that your comments are merely harmless banter?

Would YOU personally not get offended if a Brit said on a UK forum something along the lines of, oh Russians are such a pain in the arse? They're dirty and unreliable? And I wouldn't let my apartment out to them?

My granny whom I love dearly and wouldn't say a bad word about travelled across the Soviet Union many times over since she was a baby. Met lots of people of all ethnic groups. Had respect for all of them. Made a great many friends in Central Asia and the Caucasus, among other places. BUT turned racist in her old age. Carried away with the flow.

THAT is the one thing I really enjoy in the UK compared to Russia - people do realise that racism begins in your mind and not when you actually hit someone in the face for being black or whatever. And most at least try to behave accordingly.

However, I do apologise to you personally, and all other MT users, for getting personal. I usually hate doing that. I just don't condone racism.

San Sanych,

can't talk about the US, but here in the UK you can get away with ALL of those things APART from a Jew joke. Although depends on the joke.
I've SEEN people smoke in pubs AFTER the ban. Depends on the landlord. And whether he/she is worried that any of the customers would alert the police. Smoking in the middle of the road is no problem at all. No ban on that.

Talking politics? You'd be in more trouble talking football with a rival team supporter. Yet people talk football - and politics - all the time. A great conversation starter btw :)

Complimenting a lady? Just don't go overboard and you're fine. Common sense. Like anywhere else.

Walking down the road? So long as you're streetwise, you'll be fine in the roughest of neighbourhoods. Like anywhere else. Now you wouldn't go roaming the roads on your own in the middle of the night in a run-down neighbourhood somewhere in Grozny unless you're local?

The REAL reason why various governments are clamping down on smoking is NOT bacause they care about the health of the population, or the rights of non-smokers. The truth is they don't give a flying duck. They're banning smoking because someone has calculated exactly how much of a burden smoking-related health problems are on the healthcare of their respective countries, and therefore on those countries' budgets. THAT is why smoking has suddently become oh so evil. (I'm not a smoker by the way, and I'd like more people to CHOOSE not to smoke, but I don't like the way - or the reasons why - they are FORCED to give up).

Oh btw AMOR 69 + miss_sunshine,

many thanks for correcting me on the US maternity leave issue.
Although don't you think 8-12 weeks paid leave is still rather cruel?
Also, recuperation from a C-section generally takes much longer than natural birth, and 3 months is not unheard of.

An important point here is the length of PAID leave as many mothers simply can't afford to take unpaid leave. For the same reason (ie financial) many mothers in Russia have to return to work way before their 3-year leave is over.

Another thing to consider that here in the UK they recommend that a baby under 12 weeks be fed at least every four hours, and if they sleep through a feed they should be woken up. Meaning that until a baby is AT LEAST 3 months old a mother will be getting no sleep which in many cases makes her entirely unfit for work outside of home.In fact, most babies will not sleep through the night until they are 6, 10, 12, 18 months or even 3 years old.

There is also some well-documented evidence that the shorter the maternity leave, few mothers will succeed in breastfeeding their babies beyond those early weeks. Countries with the highest rates of breastfeeding, both in the early days and long-term breastfeeding, tend to be those where maternity leave is longer. No other factor, "breast is best" campain, or incentive is as effective in promoting high breastfeeding rates as a decent maternity leave.

 AMOR 69

rebelpants,
If we are talking about mother's health, physically she usually fully recovers after 12 weeks. Often women get pregnant again 3 months later after giving birth, and there is no problem with that.
But child-care is another story. It is really difficult for many young families, if they do not get support from their extended families. I do not mean financial support. I have many co-workers with newborns. They struggle a lot. Often husband and wife work different shifts, so one of them is home day or night. They pay to schoolgirls to babysit, while nobody is home. They all manage somehow.
Note, if a young woman has a low-paid job, she would better stay home and get child-support from the government. If she is well educated and has decent job, she would prefer to hire a babysitter and return to her routines.

Da trifft es uns zur Stelle;
Es ward der Warjag, das treue Schiff,
Zu einer brennenden Hölle!

Rings zuckende Leiber und grauser Tod,
Ein Ächzen, Röcheln und Stöhnen —
Die Flammen um unser Schiff
Wie feuriger Rosse Mдhnen!

Lebt wohl, Kameraden, lebt wohl, hurra!
